Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon has two major roles while a person is running. It lowers the forefoot to the ground after heelstrike; and raises the heel during “toeing off.” Running uphill or downhill causes a greater amount of stress on the Achilles tendon. Downhill causes the forefoot to strike the ground with a greater force. Uphill causes the heel to be much lower than the forefoot and therefore takes more force from the calf muscles to raise the heel before toeing off. The tendon is made of several tissues that are flexible.
