The Assassination Conspiracy of Abraham Lincoln

President Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He was president during the hardest time of our country. He was a stabilizing force during a time when the country was consumed with instability. The instability became even more pronounced on April 15, 1865, when Lincoln was assassinated. The assassination was the result of a conspiracy by a group who were afraid of a potential Lincoln dynasty. John Wilkes Booth, Michael O’ Laughlin, Sam Arnold, George A. Atzerodt, David Herold, and John Surralt were the original conspirators behind Lincoln’s assassination (Bishop 73, 78). Then, John Wilkes Booth enlisted the final member of the conspirators, Lewis Paine. In a way, this man was the best because he could be relied upon to kill on order (Bishop 77, 78).
