Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was instrumental in freeing slaves in the United States. From right at the beginning Lincoln was pressured by abolitionists and radical Republicans to issue an Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln did approve the proclamation but he postponed action until he had more support from the Americans. Lincoln said “I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.”(Civil War Era 21) when he accepted the Republican nomination. Lincoln then denied the social equality of the black and white races. Lincoln’s quote, “Slavery should be contained but not attacked.” (Civil War Era 26) was a huge help in Lincoln’s nomination in 1860.
