Perceptions of Sex in Minot’s “Lust”
Susan Minot’s short story “Lust,” points out the extreme differences in the attitudes that men and women have concerning sexual relationships as they are portrayed through the life of the narrator. This young girl, as she attends boarding school, lives a very sexually active lifestyle. She is happy and enjoys her ways for quite some time, but her true desire is to be loved. This is a desire that will never be satisfied because she “can’t…open [her] heart” (310). The adventures the narrator experiences by means of her promiscuous lifestyle, will ultimately leave a void in her heart that, if ever, will take a lot of time, patience and heartbreaks to be filled.
