A Unique Lifestyle and a Unique Painting Style
Georgia O’keeffe was one of the great woman painters of her time. Her husband, Alfred Stieglitz, claimed, “At last, a woman on paper!” to illustrate his view that O’keeffe is the first great artist to bring the true essence and experience of womanhood to her work (Getlein, 125). Georgia O’keeffe lived a busy life that was completely to her own beat. Drawn to the southwest to inspire her paintings and to New York to be with her husband, O’keeffe was constantly traveling back and forth between the two. O’keeffe especially appreciated the landscapes of Texas and New Mexico, and when Stieglitz died, she permanently moved to New Mexico. Unlike many artists, O’keeffe was able make a very good living painting. Through Stieglitz’s connections, she was able to exhibit her work and sell it at high prices.
