A Two-Class Society in “Mary” and “The Stolen Party”

In the essays “Mary” written by Maya Angelou and “The Stolen Party” written by Liliana Heker, both of the authors write from the eyes of girls to expose the class differences between the white people and the colored people. Although Angelou's "Mary" and Heker's "The Stolen Party" share a common theme about social difference, they also differ.

The major similary in the two essays is both girls’ feelings of self importance are damaged, and they changes their opinions that they can be accepted by the genteel racism. In “Mary”, Margaret just wants to learn some “high-class” etiquette from Mrs. Cullinan as her mother expects. After she is told by Miss Glory that Mrs. Cullinan can’t birth a child, she feels pity for her master. She tries to work hard. “Arrived early, left late.”(Making Contact, P. 283) But soon, she get to know the true face of Mrs. Cullinan. She doesn’t like her and doesn’t dream to be friend with her.
