A Time to Kill A Time To Kill by John Grisham What would you do if someone raped, and tried to kill your daughter? This is the question addressed in the novel “A Time To Kill”. I am sure you would be really angry. In the Novel, Carl Lee Hailey, a black resident of Clanton, Mississippi, decided to take matters into his own hands. The novel starts with two white males, Billy Ray Cob, and Pete Willard, raping Tonya Hailey, a ten-year old black girl. When they are done with her they leave her in a dry creek bed to die. Luckily, the next morning some black fishermen find her laying in the middle of the road, and they return her to her house. Sheriff Ozzie Walls is sent to investigate. He has a hunch that it was Billy Ray Cobb because of Tonya’s description of their truck. He finds Cobb and Willard drunk in a bar outside of Clanton. Billy Ray is raving on about how he raped a little nigger girl when Ozzie finds him. Cobb and Willard are placed under arrest. ...
