Jane Austen was born on 16 December 1775, the seventh of eight children in the small Hampshire village of Steventon. Her father, George Austen, was an Anglican clergyman, the rector of Steventon with a moderately good income and moderately poor health. ¡°Jane¡¯s mother, Cassandra, was a minister¡¯s daughter. It must have been a crowded household, with two daughters and five brothers (besides a sixth, apparently retarded and deaf, who was cared for away from home). The Austens were far from rich, and to supplement his income George Austen prepared boys for university, tutoring them in his home¡± (Lauber, John. 1).
