A Separate Piece

In the novel A Separate Piece the theme of jealousy is predominant. The first sign of this jealousy comes up when Finny wears his pink shirt. Finny wears this pink shirt as a sign of the first Allied bombing in Central Europe. Gene gets very jealous of him because Finny is able to get away with wearing this color. He (Gene) also says that the color of Finny’s shirt makes him look like a homosexual or a fairy. I feel that there is a little bit of jealousy when Finny wears his necktie as a belt and does not get in trouble for it. In this part in the novel Finny is talking to the Substitute Headmaster’s wife while they have tea. Gene is very frustrated when Finny does not get in trouble.
