A Separate Peace

In “A Separate Peace”, there were a few references at the beginning of the book that one
would only understand after reading it the whole way through. In the beginning
paragraphs Gene expresses his feelings of the change that the school has gone through
since he was there 15 years ago. He describes the shinier woodwork that has been done.
“I didn’t entirely like this glossy new surface, because it made the school look like a
museum, and that’s exactly what it was to me, and what I did not want it to be.” It seems
as though he may be referring to breaking the rules. He saw the school as a museum in
which everything must be kept under some order, but he didn’t want it that way. He’s
probably thinking...
