A Rose For Emily Ellis 1 Ryan Ellis Mrs. Shaw Eng 1123 18 November 02 Who’s In Charge The setting in both “A Rose for Emily” and “The Yellow Wall-Paper” show us the role that women played in society. When comparing these two stories it is obvious to see that both settings are very similar in many ways. The women in both of these stories play an inferior role to a male. For example in “A Rose for Emily” Emily’s father seems to make all of her decisions for her. He does this by rejecting all of her possible mates that are presented to her. He thinks that Emily is to good for any of the men. By doing this he is giving Emily no chance to start a family of her own in the future making Emily depressed and for the most part insane. As for “ The Yellow Wall-Paper” there is a similar situation. The narrator’s husband makes her stay in a confined room with nothing to do but sleep.
