A rose for Emily

Miss Brill may not go to the park anymore since by the end of the story, her fantasy world, which served as a fuel for her life, is shattered and she is forced to confront reality. The impact of the conversation between the young lovers is so detrimental on her heart, that by the end of the story “she [hears] something crying” (Mansfield, 61). The voices that she hears originate from her own heart and represent her inner destruction and failure to be a part of the youthful vigilant world.
