A Raisin in the Sun

Walter has a dream. He is not the only character with a dream, but nonetheless, the way he goes about obtaining his dream affects his whole family. Walter’s father dies before the book begins and the life insurance provides a check of $10,000 to Mama. Each member of the family has a dream and their own idea of how the money should be used. Beneatha would like the money to be applied to her education to become a doctor. Walter wants to open a liquor store with two other partners, and at the end of the book, it becomes apparent that Mama wants to buy a house and have a garden. Even Travis had a dream. He wants to be a garbage man. This family was full of dreams and hopes.
Mama uses some of the money to put a down payment on a house when the check comes. She wants to bring her family up in better conditions then their two-bedroom apartment where Travis does not even have a bed to sleep in. The house Mama buys is in a well-to-do white neighborhood.
