On the night of her thirteenth birthday, when she ought to be eating a fancy birthday dinner and enjoy her beautiful presents, Haley is watching her mother flip out. As in check herself into the hospital—without knowing for how long. Now its just Haley and her older brother, Otis, who’s spending most of his time selling incense with a buddy, he claims. To make some money of her own, Haley takes a summer job helping Jackson, a music teacher, clean out his backyard in preparation for a visit from his grown daughter.
Hauling away many years’ worth of debris is hard and dirty work, but it’s also invigorating and restorative, as the cluttered yard slowly becomes a claming haven of swept dirt. Then one morning, Haley’s life is upended once again when the police come for Otis. Her family scattered, Haley is placed in the care of social services. But she won’t let go of the one thing she’s made her own.
