Jesse Root Grant was born on January 23, 1794 near Greensburg, Pennsylvania. When his mother, Rachel Kelly Grant, died in 1805 his family broke apart. His father, Noah Grant, could not support the six children being a shoemaker, so he sent Jesse out on his own at age eleven.
