A Midsummer Night's Dream`

In "A Midsummer Night's Dream," William Shakespeare pairs irony with comedy. Egeus, father of Hermia, goes to Thesius (ruler of Athens) to urge him to pass a law that would then force his daughter Hermia to marry Demetrius. Though Demetrius desired to marry Hermia, she wished to be with Lysander. This law Thesius would pass would force a female to marry whosoever her father chose. Upon learning of this, Hermia and Lysander decide to leave to elope in a neighboring town where they would no longer be subject to Athenian law. However, Hermia tells her friend Helena of her plans, and Helena, who was once seduced and abandoned by Demetrius, tells Demetrius hoping to win his affections. That night Hermia and Lysander flee into the woods, and Demetrius follows. Helena then follows Demetrius.
