A Journey from Perversion to Morality

In Crime and Punishment, Dostoyevsky shows Raskolnikov's struggle to change from a black unethical person to a moral person empathetic about life. His journey from his lowest point to his restoration is full of many ups and downs. The dark setting and images serve as an excellent backdrop for Raskolnikov's thoughts.
Dostoyevsky uses the dark imagery and setting of Crime and Punishment to parallel Raskolnikov's thoughts and his general attitude. He willingly lives in poverty and neglects even his personal care, wearing old ratty clothing. He attributes his reason for the murder to his depressing way of life. All these dark images allude to Raskolnikov's gloomy attitude and dark state of mind.
The story is about Raskolnikov's journey, mentally and spiritually, from his corrupt idea of right and wrong to his restoration of sensitive and caring feelings. The reader is first introduced to Raskolnikov as he is going to "rehearse" his plan to murder Alyona Ivanovna, the pawn...
