A team of marine biologists was lead by Robert D. Ballard. They went on a submarine, named Alvin, and dove 2550 meters to the bottom. They were looking for hydrothermal vents off the Galapagos Islands. When they went down and found multiple vents thriving with life. There were all kinds of organisms like clam shells, and tube worms.
