A DAY THAT WILL LIVE IN INFAMY

December 7th, 1941 is “a day that will live in infamy.” By attacking Pearl Harbor that
day the Japanese brought the U.S. in the World War II (WWII). While they thought they
were destroying the U.S. Pacific Fleet, our aircraft carriers were out at sea. Because the
Japanese did not destroy the U.S. aircraft carriers, the U.S. was forced to use them in
place of their battle ships. The U.S. found out that the aircraft carrier was a lot better than
the battleship, which allowed the U.S. to win the war for the Allies.

Two years after WWII had started, the Japanese were planning to attack Pearl Harbor
because they needed to cripple the U.S. Pacific fleet in order to invade China, Indo-China,
the Philippines, and other places. The Japanese were successfully in capturing most of
these places. They needed to do this because the Japanese needed more natural resources.
Pearl Harbor was an important base for the U.S. because it was close to Asia and other
regions of the Pacific and the U.S. Pacific fleet was stationed there.
Japan’s best admiral led the attack. His name was Isoroku Yamamoto. He sent six air
craft carriers that were protected by 2 battle ships and a dozen cruisers and destroyers for
the attack.
