A DAY IN A SOLDIER’S SHOES

My heart is thumping never felt like this before; I’m trembling all over. Just thinking what can happen to me, will I make it in one piece. It’s like a nightmare only I’m awake. When I joined the army I wanted adventure I never thought I would be on the battlefield with my fellow troops at war with Iraq.

We are just outside Baghdad ready for anything that comes at us waiting silently with our bodies flat on the ground. My eyes hurt from the dust, I looked back at the other soldiers, and we are all watching and waiting with our guns pointing towards the enemy. We all lay still on the ground for hours while missiles and jets fly over us. In the near distance we could hear the bombs explode then huge fireballs fill the desert sky. The sounds were frightening and we felt the ground below us tremble. I couldn’t take my eyes away from the near distance. Then I feel pain, pain in my stomach, and then I brake out into a sweat. I’m terrified. I have to try and hide it...
