A Critical Analysis of "On the Road"
In "On the road" Langston Hughes uses symbols to interpret the racism that Sargeant suffers during the depression. In this story, Sargeant has to deal with racism in many forms.
One type of racism that Sargeant has to deal comes from a religious person, the Reverend Mr. Dorset. Sargeant is on the street; he is hungry, tired and sleepy. This fact causes him not to notice the snow even though it was falling heavily. However, the reverend sees it, when he turns on his porch light, and sees a big Black man standing in front of him. He says, " I'm sorry No! Go down this street four blocks and turn to your left, walk up seven and you'll see a relief shelter I'm sorry No! And he shuts the door" (para.3).
