“When A Man Cannot Choose He Ceases To Be A Man”

What is ‘Choice’? It is the power that every creature on earth deserves to possess. It is the ability for one to be able to direct his own fate rather than have his fate directed for him. It is a need of every living being on earth. The strength of choice is undeniable. Without choice, as the Chaplain from A Clockwork Orange says, a man ceases to be. So what if, hypothetically, the ability to choose is taken away from a man? A monster emerges. This idea is present in both Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley, and A Clockwork Orange, written by Anthony Burgess. Both of these novels contain “monsters” that are created because their right of self-direction is revoked. In Frankenstein, the monster is created by a person named Victor whose objective was to test the limits of science. The result is a monster filled with desire for companions and vengeance for his creator. On the other hand is Alex from A Clockwork Orange.
