Susan Glaspell’s “Trifles”
The nineteenth century produced several prominent female literary writers. Like many other women writers, Glaspell dealt with issues such as gender differences and inherited a rich legacy from the women of the nineteenth century. In Greenwich Village, Glaspell and her husband wrote openly about many controversial issues (Smith 179). In 1915 Glaspell started the Provincetown Players. Glaspell’s involvement in the Provincetown Players strongly influenced the writing of the play Trifles by introducing her to new people and ideas as well as maturing her writing.
Susan Glaspell is an example of a late nineteenth-century female writer. She “came of age” the same time American writing moved to modernism and she helped found the modern movement in American writing (Carter 247).
