'The Freedom of the City' - Brian FrielHow does the text explore the different ways in which the concept of ‘freedom’ can be understood?

Brian Friel’s “Freedom of the City” is, as the name suggests, a text based on the notion of freedom. An illustrated lack of freedom is demonstrated throughout the play, as each character’s different sentiment of freedom is explored. The civil rights movement in general is portrayed as viewing freedom as escaping from the stranglehold help upon them by the occupying British power, thus making it primarily a political issue.
This text explores different interpretations of freedom as perceived by the three Guildhall occupants, whether it be holding a position in society, exposing the inequalities of an unfair system or simply basing it on domestic and personal life.
