“The Decade of the Tin Lizzie”

“She might shimmy and rattle and wheeze, but she was all things to men.” (Jones, 63) Although the Model T was not a very attractive car, or a smoothly running one at that, it was a car that forever revolutionized the world of transportation. There were many cars that appeared before Henry Ford’s Model T, but most were expensive, unreliable, and generally only toys for the rich. Its design was simple, tough and inexpensive, which was more than the design of any other car was during the 1920’s. The model T, or the Tin Lizzie as it was called, was one of the most marketable cars of its time, prospering throughout the entire 1920’s decade, as well as beyond that. There were many qualities that made the model T so marketable, but three distinct ones were that it was practical, easy to maintain and the fact that it was not exclusively a rich person’s car, but rather it was the car of the common people. (Jones, 62-63)
