“She Walks in Beauty”
by George Gordon, Lord Byron


The poem is beautiful. It sounds as if Byron admires this woman a great deal. If you did not know the background to the poem, you would think he was talking about a lover. The poem is written, however, about his cousin’s wife whom he saw wearing a dark colored mourning gown with spangles on it.
In the opening paragraph, Byron portrays a beautiful night with stars in the sky and then a beautiful woman appears. It almost sounds like he is saying that her beauty overshadows the beautifully clear night sky. I think any woman would like to be admired in this manner.
Byron sounds to me like a hopeless ...
