“ Rain”

In the novel, A Farewell To Arms, by Ernest Hemingway, rain is used as a symbol. Rain symbolized sorrow from Henry and Catherine. Rain is tears of great loss and hopelessness. Rain is a symbol of death throughout the novel.

In the first chapter Hemingway introduces rain as a symbol of death. Rain becomes a symbol of death by bringing Cholera to the troops at the start of winter. The Cholera brought by rain killed seven thousand soldiers.
“At the start of the winter came the permanent rain and with the rain came the cholera. But it was checked and in the end only seven thousand died of it in the army.” Pg.4
The reader will think of death when reading of rain in war. Black chestnut trunks caused by rain foreshadow deaths caused by battle to win the mountain behind the chestnut tree forest.
