‘Oedipus is as much to blame for what happens as Fate.’ Do you agree?

Oedipus’ downfall was indeed caused by the Gods who control the fate of mankind, “Certain it is that by the help of God we stand - or fall.” Fate is defined as a set future that no human can have control over. It is believed that fate ruled the lives of the citizens of ancient Greece and for poor, helpless Oedipus this meant disaster. Oedipus’ parents, Laius and Jocasta, were told at Oedipus’ birth by Apollo’s Oracle that he was destined one day to kill his father, and to become his own mothers husband. This clearly shows that Oedipus is at no blame for what had become of him; fate and the Gods were the ones who plotted out Oedipus’ life even before his birth.
