From the start of the novel it is obvious that Mark Walsh is carrying an immense ‘burden’ of some type, however we, the reader do not learn what this burden is completely until the end of the novel. The effects of many wars had all been pushed aside by Mark, until finally Mark is not able ‘to keep it separate’, he lets his personal life, through his friendship with Colin into his professional life. It is at this stage that Mark starts ‘feel(ing)’pain and loses his ability to feel emotions.

Before Marks trip to Kurdistan he convinces Colin to make the journey ...
