“ I had Barbara”

Edith Wharton’s short story called “Roman Fever” is a story that takes a turn that you would never have expected. There are two women who are the primary characters in Wharton’s short story and they are named Alida Slade and Grace Ansley. These two well-to-do American widows are on a trip escorting their unmarried daughters on a grand vacation throughout Rome. The setting of the start of the story is with the two women sitting on the balcony of a restaurant overlooking Rome specifically the Palatine and the Forum. The story from the beginning reads like it could possibly be one of those predictable stories, but in more reading of the story little parts of the plot slowly start to unfurl. This novel is effective in its presentation because of the authors use of surprise for the reader, the fact that the actions of the main characters hint to the reader that there is something deeper involved with those characters, and lastly because of the sudden plot twist.
