‘Compare the way poets have written about love and loss, bringing out different aspects of the theme’

Throughout the ages of Pre 1914, different and same poets have written a variety of prominent poems. ‘Porphyria’s Lover’ and ‘My Last Duchess’ have both been written by the same poet, ‘Robert Browning.’ These two poems represent the same theme, ‘Love and Loss’ but in different aspects. However, they are both demonstrating abnormal love, as both female lovers are killed in the hands of their lovers. Altogether, I have carefully analysed five different poems, including ‘Porphyria’s Lover,’ ‘My Last Duchess’ but also, ‘Cousin Kate,’ ‘To His Coy Mistress’ and finally, ‘First Love.’ ‘Cousin Kate’ by ‘Christina Rossetti’ is more of a betrayed love, which leaves an innocent and hard working ‘cottage maiden’ miserable forever when she could of been something better and special like a ‘dove,’ if she had not f...
