"Common Sense"

Thomas Paine’s Common Sense was a very influential writing during a very significant point in America’s history. At that time, in the year of 1776, was the period of the Revolutionary War between American and British soldiers. During this battle both opposing sides had wondered what exactly they were fighting on behalf of. Some had seen it as a struggle towards America’s independence and others as ‘wake up call’ for Parliament to fulfill their requests and see the colonists as a part of the British government. These confusions and differing views is exactly why Thomas Paine wrote this pamphlet. He wanted to put the wondering at rest and to inform the colonists that independence is what they were fighting for. Throughout the publication Thomas Paine expresses many of his ideas; he explains to the people why they should want to be independent, how they can go about getting their independence, and how they should govern themselves once they do become independent.
