“An Analysis of how narrative and genre creates meaning and generates response in an extract from the film, “Se7en,” directed by David Fincher”

The film is essentially a thriller; however there are elements of other genres involved which cause it to subvert audience expectation.
The film “Se7en” is basically about two detectives, David Mills, played by Brad Pitt, and William Somerset, played by Morgan Freeman. It is essentially a cop-drama with the two detectives on the trail of a serial killer. So the film could be described as a cop–drama and a thriller, but the narrative and the way the film deviates from typical thrillers makes the film much more than just a “cop–drama.”
Every time we see Morgan Freeman’s character, he’s always shown as very intellectual. For example, in his apartment we see a chess board which is highly symbolic of the nature of the film; a battle between two intellectuals, himself and the antagonist, John Doe. At first it seems to be just about the two of them, however at the end of the film we realise that it is in fact all about John Doe and Mills
