“A Man For All Seasons”

When Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine, is unable to produce an heir to the throne, he uses that as an excuse for the pope to give him a divorce. Henry wanted a divorce from Catherine, so then he could marry Anne Boleyn. Everyone backs up the King on his request except for Sir Thomas More, who is highly religious and doesn’t believe in divorcing. When Cardinal Wolsey, Chancellor of England, names More as his successor, it becomes important for Henry to get More’s support, but More cannot be swayed. Henry demands the clergy to renounce the Pope and to name him Head of the Church of England. Oliver Cromwell frames More, forcing him to resign as Chancellor. Eventually More is brought to trial, found guilty of treason, and beheaded.
The main characters in the book, “A man For All Seasons,” are Sir Thomas More and Henry VIII. Sir Thomas More is a lawyer, who eventually becomes Chancellor of England in 1529. Henry VIII is the King of England. The story takes place...
