13 Colonies

The thirteen colonies were broken up into three types of colonies. New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Massachusetts were the royal colonies. Royal colonies were controlled by the king with appointed governors, and were also legislated by him too. The next type of colony was known as a proprietary colony. Proprietary colonies selected the governors. The selection of governor had to be approved by the king, as did the laws. Proprietary colonies included Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.
